Grand Theft Auto Online players put a lot of time and thought into their characters so when the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game were announced, some were worried that they’d have to start over from scratch when upgrading their games. Luckily, Rockstar provides a way to transfer a character over for anyone looking to play the most recent versions of GTA Online.
Save data transfers were something of a stumbling point when the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S first launched; however, many developers have found workarounds that don’t require the player to navigate confusing system data menus in the consoles themselves. Instead, many games have options for it in their much simpler menu interfaces.
As it so happens, transferring a character from the PS4 or Xbox One version of GTA Online is simple and overall pretty painless. All it requires is a little menu navigation and an internet connection.

How to Transfer Characters in GTA Online
To transfer a character across versions of GTA Online, you’ll need to make sure that the Rockstar Social Club account is the same across both editions of the game. When you first boot up the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version, you should be prompted to sign in: make sure you use the same account that’s registered in your previous version otherwise you won’t be able to transfer your character.
Once you’ve signed in, you should be prompted to “Migrate Profile.” From there, you’ll be given a list of profiles to migrate connected to the Rockstar Social Club account. If you’ve got multiple, unfortunately, you can only choose one at a time and can’t merge any together.
After you’ve found your character, select it and confirm that you’ve selected the correct one. From there, you should be able to choose your imported character. If you’ve got two characters connected to the profile, you’ll need to delete one if you want to start a fresh, new character, but that’s exactly how it was in the previous version of GTA Online.
