Halo Infinite Beta: How To Improve FPS On PC, Fix Crashes & Skip Intros | Fixes Guide

November 16, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Halo Infinite has problems. Here’s what we know that might help you.

Halo Infinite celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Halo series by dropping the multiplayer portion of the game early — and it is totally free to play. Anyone can join in, but it is clear that this isn’t a full release. This is absolutely an open beta, and if you’re jumping in, you’re doing it to help test the game before it finally gets fixed (hopefully) in December. Until then, thousands of players are squeezing onto the servers and experiencing a whole load of issues. Performance is rough, crashes are prevalent, and many can’t get into the game at all. To help with all these problems, we’ve put together a list of fixes and information pulled from a variety of community sources — and through our own experiences trying to get Halo Infinite to work properly. Some of us are just out of luck until patches land in the near future.

How To Improve FPS

Halo Infinite on PC is a little screwy right now. The settings absolutely aren’t working as intended, so we have to pull some strange moves to get GPUs running at full capacity. If you want to squeeze the most out of Halo Infinite and get a better FPS, try the following steps.

  • Disable the in-game FPS limiter. This feature seems to actively cause stutter and ends up choosing the minimum FPS instead of reaching the maximum FPS listed.
    • Otherwise, you can set Minimum FPS to 120 (Max) / 60, and Maximum FPS to 144 / 60 — set Maximum to whatever your PC monitor can handle. 120 is the maximum FPS you can input for minimum FPS.
  • Disable Vsync.
  • Uninstall the Multiplayer Textures Pack. Learn how to delete the texture pack here.

  • NVIDIA FIX: Rollback Nvidia drivers to 472.12

How To Fix Crashes

Many early players are reporting significant and constant crashes while playing on PC. Right now, we’re waiting on word from Microsoft to fix this issue — which seems to especially target players with AMD cards. Right now, here’s what we know.

Before trying anything, make sure to upgrade your graphic drivers and download the latest updates for Halo Infinite.

  • If you have less than 4GB of vRam, Halo Infinite may not start.
  • Users with Nvidia GTX 900 cards will experience crashes. The developers released a statement that this is a bug and will be fixed.
    • The Nvidia 1050ti is the minimum required graphics card for Halo Infinite. Previous cards are likely not to be supported.
  • If you’re playing Halo Infinite on Steam, this version is much more unstable. Try deleting it and downloading Halo Infinite via the Xbox App — which has many of its own technical problems. If you don’t want to download through the Xbox App, you may have to wait until a patch fixes the crashing issue.
    • You can download the Xbox App here for free.

If you’re experiencing crashes, you may need an upgraded CPU — your CPU must be capable of running DirectX12. Even with all of this in mind, it is clear that Halo Infinite is crashing far more than normal. We may just have to wait for fixes in the near future.

How To Skip Intros

Skipping intros is a long-honored tradition for gamers on PC — getting rid of the opening intros is very simple. Just follow these steps.

  • On Steam, right-click Halo Infinite and go to Properties -> Local Files -> Browse…
  • Open the Videos folder in the Installation Files and delete the following files:
    • intro.mp4
    • Startup_Sequence_Loading.mp4

And that’s it! Incredibly easy. There’s no reason not to get rid of these files. Just be aware that they may be replaced after future updates. If they appear again, just re-delete the video files.
