10 Secrets, Cheats & Easter Eggs That Took Fans Years To Discover

August 11, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Insulting pit crews, kickass schoolgirls, and secret pirate ships — these are the Easter eggs it took fans years to find.

A Secret Pirate Ship [Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain]

Here’s yet another secret that had to be revealed by the devs — but only after being discovered by a team of modders pouring through the asset files of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. While taking apart the game to rebuild it, the modders found a weird ship called the HMCS: Bitter. At first, it seemed there was no legitimate way to access this area.

It turned out there is a way to access it — as suggested by developer Denis Dyack in 2010. It wasn’t until 2020, this year, that players were able to discover the four hidden switches and unlock the way. These switches weren’t easy to find either — only an Energy Bolt could activate them, as they were technically unreachable by the player. That anyone found the real method to unlock this is pretty mind-blowing.

JPEG Silently Cheering For Leon [Resident Evil 4]

I’ve played Resident Evil 4 probably a dozen times. It’s one of my favorite games ever, and I never knew there was a strange woman cheering me on near the end of the game. On the military island section, you’ll have to fight through a large base on the coast while a helicopter helps you cut through the swarms of ganados. Eventually, the helicopter crashes (as is RE tradition) and you’ll enter the next room alone.

That’s where the cheering lady can be seen. If you use the enhanced scope on the Rifle, you can see this strange woman in the ruins in the far distance, slightly to the right — using hacks, players have gotten a much closer look at her. It’s a flat image of a woman with her arms above her head. Is this even an Easter egg? It’s so weird! For all we know, maybe this is just a marker the developers left in for scale. It’s still an interesting little detail that took years to find.

That’s just a fraction of the weird Easter eggs fans didn’t discover for years. We didn’t even get into the Calendar Man in Arkham City or the many, many Easter eggs in Gears of War 3. Got any favorites? We could fill a second list with all the weird discoveries players have found in their favorite games.
