Far: Lone Sails
- Estimated Time To Beat: 3~ Hours
- Available To Purchase On: Steam
Here’s an underdog game that I’ve been championing for years. Far: Lone Sails is like Limbo without the scares. Instead of dodging monsters, you’ll explore a vast dry lakebed in your one-wheeled train.
To keep your trusty vehicle going, you’ll need to scrounge for fuel and constantly maintain your vehicle like a true conductor. It’s a soothing journey that’s full of highs and lows. One of my favorites of the generation for the music alone.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- Estimated Time To Beat: 3~ Hours
- Available To Purchase On: Steam
This creative little game is like playing a co-op adventure solo. Instead of requiring two players, you’ll control both brothers with each thumbstick. Press the matching triggers to grab, and you’re ready to go on a long adventure in search of a cure for your ailing father.
You’ll fight giants, dodge monsters, and solve puzzles while controlling both brothers. Very fun — the game does a good job pulling at your heartstrings more than once.
Into The Breach
- Estimated Time To Beat: 1~ Hours
- Available To Purchase On: Steam
Into The Breach might only take 1 hour or less to complete your first time — depending on your skill — but it’s a game you can play over and over again. This RTS-Rogue-like hybrid isn’t nearly as difficult as FTL, the previous game by developer Subset Games, but it’s still incredibly fun. Controlling a team of three mechs, you must fight giant bugs and protect cities across several islands.
Thanks to time travel, you already know what the alien bugs will do before they do it. That turns this turn-based RTS into a complex game of Chess, where you can counter or interrupt any actions. It’s a clever twist on turn-based strategy games, and one of the most fun in the genre.
Papers, Please
- Estimated Time To Beat: 5~ Hours
- Available To Purchase On: Steam
Papers, Please puts you in the shoes of a fictional border agent, stamping the entry visas and passports of desperate people. It’s a bleak little game that’s full of delightful little details — and it’s all about mastering monotony. It doesn’t sound fun, but thanks to the breezy structure and constant interruptions from your daily routine, this is one of the most fun (and fascinating) games to come out on Steam.
