5 Best (& 5 Worst) Bugs, Glitches & Exploits Of 2019

January 10, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Best | Christmas Light Madness (Red Dead Redemption 2)

This accidentally festive visual glitch was strangely common among Red Dead Redemption 2 early-adopters on PC. The wild west open-world extravaganza came to PC in 2019, and brought a whole load of weird issues. Most of those problems were fixed in short-order (which is basically standard practice for Rockstar at this point) but one weird glitch I kind of wish stayed — the Christmas light explosion!

Nobody really knows the cause of this glitch. It all has something to do with graphics cards and lighting and atmosphere settings — whatever the reason, it leads to a neon cascade of glowing, random colors. In the very first act, where the Van Der Linde gang is stuck in the snowy mountains, it really makes you feel closer to Christmas. This problem might be fixed, but it was one of the most visually interested surprises of 2019.

Worst | Max Raid Exploit Blocking Real Players From Joining Raids (Pokemon Sword & Shield)

Max Raids are a new online feature in Pokémon Sword & Shield, giving trainers from all around the world a chance to join-up and fight enormous Pokémon battles together. Unless you were stuck in an endless queue because everyone was using the Max Raid exploit. Some impatient players used a time zone exploit to swap the current Max Raid Pokémon before the 24-hour reset. While this exploit was handy, if used in a certain way, it would cause empty online Max Raid lobbies to open. Unsuspecting players could join these lobbies — and find themselves in endless, worthless online lobbies that no one could (or would) join.

Once in an aborted lobby, you’d have to back-out. While it isn’t game-breaking, it does make the process of finding a real online Max Raid incredibly annoying. Thankfully, the glitching community has dyed down thanks to a few important patches from Game Freak, but during the early days of Pokémon Sword & Shield, it was almost impossible to join a legit Max Raid.
