10 Best Levels Of 2019

January 6, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Revisit the best levels of 2019 with our end-of-the-year retrospective.

Kashyyk (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order)

In a game packed with fun locations, the planet Kashyyk is my personal favorite. The Imperial Refinery, where you and rebel allies (like a returning Saw Guerrara from Star Wars: Rogue One) stage a Wookie revolt, is just the sort of evil base I’m a fan of — but the mission gets really good in the Shadowlands.

Your dutiful Jedi later returns to Kashyyk to rescue Tarfful, a Wookie leader living in a super-sized tree. Using the new natural bounce-mechanics, you’ll have to climb to the top of the skyscraper redwood and do battle with your first major boss. The Ninth Sister fight is a great capper to my favorite level of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The Embassy (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare)

The best moments of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are intimate. In the early game, your SAS team carefully clears a safehouse filled with armed killers. While that moment is incredible, the Embassy might just be the most varied mission of the entire campaign. Starting with your team responding to a nightmarish scenario — as Al Qaeda analogues break into an American Embassy and begin executing hostages, you must extract their leader.

The trickiest parts blinded by the fog of war. You’ll have to engage targets while civilians try to escape, then eventually engage hostiles in the city streets — you’ll have to decide if a car driving closer to your barricade is an enemy or just a civilian. It all ends with a terrifying defense, as your team uses flares to light up the pitch-black night and spot armed enemies moving on your position by the dozens. It’s an unforgettable mission that grapples with the agonizing unknowns of warfare and the ethics of engagement.
