The Outer Worlds: The Frightened Engineer Quest | All 3 Volume Locations

An early quest in The Outer Worlds can be pretty tricky if you don’t scrounge every book and file in Edgewater.

This quest, found in the Botanical Lab settlement north of the main town, sends you out into the world with minimum information to collect three lost volumes. The books can only be located if you’ve already got some clues. The first book is easy, the other two? Not so much.

In the full guide below, you’ll find how to start this quest and where to find all three volumes to complete it. It’s the one quest on the starting planet that’s pretty easy to miss on your first playthrough.

To begin ‘The Frightened Engineer‘ quest, go to the Deserter’s Camp at the Botanical Lab north of Edgewater. Past the green house, talk to Thomas Kemp to begin the quest.

There are three lost volumes he wants you to find.

• Volume #1: Emerald Vale Community Center – Found on the second floor, on a desk.
• Volume #2: Edgewater Cannery – Climb up to the catwalk in the main cannery room. The volume is inside an empty office.
• Volume #3: Geothermal Power Plant – Down at the bottom of the silo where Higgins is hiding. It’s right next to his bedroll.

Find all three volumes, and you can return them to Thomas Kemp. You can also finish the main quest at the Geothermal Plant. It doesn’t matter which side you choose, you’ll still be able to turn in the quest and earn a reward.
