Nintendo Switch Lite: How To Transfer Save Files From Your Switch To A New Switch Lite

September 21, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Want to transfer your save files to the Nintendo Switch Lite? You can do that. Here’s how it works.

If you’re planning on using the new Nintendo Switch Lite as a portable secondary console, you can start swapping save files right now. The process is a little cumbersome, so I’m going to explain exactly how it works with step-by-step instructions.

There’s a lot of little things you can do with your Switch that the console doesn’t quite explain — you can capture video, share batches of in-game screenshots with friends, or you can transfer all your purchases to a new console if you’re upgrading. The Nintendo Switch Lite is just the first new addition to the Nintendo Switch family of game consoles — but it’s also the most portable, with a longer-lasting battery and a fancy proper D-Pad.

It’s a colorful companion for any docked Switch, and if you’re looking to start taking a secondary Switch outside in the Fall, here’s how to transfer over your save files.

How To Transfer Save Files From Your Switch To A New Switch Lite

[IMPORTANT NOTE]: This process will delete the save files on your original console while copying them to the new console.

This process is all about transferring save files from a Nintendo Switch console to a new Nintendo Switch Lite. A Nintendo Switch Online account is not required.

Before getting started, make sure both console are in close proximity (the same room) — both should be on and charged. Both systems will need the latest update, and both systems need to be connected to the internet. When you’re ready, here’s what to do.

Before Beginning: Connect To The Internet And Login With The Same Nintendo Account

Both consoles (Original Switch and Switch Lite) need to be connected to the internet, and both need to be logged into the same Nintendo Account.

  • Step #1: Original Switch -> Go to System Settings, Data Management, Transfer Your Save Data
    • Select “Send Save Data To Another Console“
    • Select the User with the Save Data you wish to Transfer.
    • Select the individual game Save Data you wish to Transfer. You don’t have to transfer all of it.
    • Select “Send Save Data“
  • Step #2: Switch Lite -> Go to System Settings, Data Management, Transfer Your Save Data
    • Select “Receive Save Data“
    • Select “OK” when the transfer is complete.

It’s just that simple — the only annoying part is that you can’t simply copy your save data onto another console. You can only transfer it — which deletes it from the original console. This system works for all Nintendo Switch consoles, not just the Nintendo Switch Lite, so you’re free to follow these steps on any console.
