- Developer: Treyarch, Raven Software
- Publisher: Activision
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX
- Release: November 13, 2020
- Co-op: TBA
- Competitive Multiplayer: Online
Call of Duty: Black Ops is making a return and it’s taking things back to a traditional style Call of Duty video game. If you don’t recall, the last installment to this sub-franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, released into the market with only a multiplayer gameplay component. The development team Treyarch opted to remove a single-player campaign storyline for a more keen focus to bring in multiplayer gameplay content. This new installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be taking players into the early 1980s. As the name suggests, players will be thrown into the mix of the Cold War as you take the role of Russell Adler as he attempts to track down a soviet spy known only as Perseus.
This game is said to be a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops and as a result, you may see some familiar faces in the campaign from the first Black Ops installment. We’re still waiting to see more information on this game but so far we know that the title will likely play some kind of role for the popular battle royale title, Call of Duty: Warzone. In the past, there were confirmed statements that Call of Duty: Warzone from last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot would continue to be supported. One of the ways it will be supported is by evolving the game to sport the content featured in the current Call of Duty video games released. In fact, the reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War came in the form of completing a series of objectives in the battle royale
#14 Call of Duty: Warzone
- Developer: Infinity Ward, Raven Software
- Publisher: Activision
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: March 10, 2020
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: Online
Call of Duty is a behemoth of a video game franchise. Each year brings out a new game and while fans typically jump from installment to installment to enjoy online multiplayer with friends or other gamers around the world, one new title may last a bit longer than others in terms of player activity. Battle royale games are all the rage right now and while there are a few that stick out among the rest, Activision was interested in seeing how Call of Duty would handle in the market. This ultimately resulted in the release of Call of Duty: Warzone.
While the game mode was released for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the game mode is also available for everyone as a free-to-play title. In the game, much like other battle royale game modes, players either venture into a solo match or team up with a squad. From there, the team is dropped into a large map as players scramble to find better weapons, items, and other resources. After, it becomes a battle to become the last man or team standing.
#13 The Outer Worlds – Peril of Gorgon
- Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
- Publisher: Private Division
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO, NS
- Release: September 9, 2020 (DLC)
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive Multiplayer: N/A
We are not done with The Outer Worlds yet. This RPG that Obsidian Entertainment released in 2019 is making a resurgence this year with the first of two storyline DLC expansions planned. The first expansion is called Peril of Gorgon and it’s hitting the marketplace in September of this year. Obsidian Entertainment has been a bit tight-lipped on just what all we can expect. So far, we know that the DLC is seamlessly added into the campaign which means that if you start a new game, this DLC is available right away.
Players will be asked to investigate an abandoned Halcyon research site that’s located on an asteroid. From there, a new noir-themed quest begins that will bring our protagonist in front of new NPCs, locations and even having players revisit some familiar locations. This is also going to add a few more weapons into the mix, enemies, more customization options, perks, among other aspects to make the game feel a bit fresh. For those of you who are interested, this is said to take about eight hours to finish which is quite a hefty expansion for players to progress through.
#12 Twin Mirror
- Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2020
- Co-op: N/A
- Competitive: N/A
Dontnod Entertainment has a new episodic adventure title for players to enjoy. The development studio may be best known for their Life is Strange series but the next episodic journey coming this year that’s not attached to the Life is Strange franchise is Twin Mirror. This is an upcoming psychological thriller which follows a protagonist named Sam who returns back to his old hometown to attend a funeral service of his best friend. Things take a turn for the worse when he awakens with no memories of the previous day while covered in blood.
This title still has plenty of questions left unanswered though as it stands right now, gamers who are interested in the title can expect the first episode to release at least some point this year. Now if you’re familiar with Dontnod Entertainment’s Life is Strange series then you may know that the second installment has been iffy in terms of just when episodes are released. As a result, some gamers are experiencing some longer wait times between episodes though we’re hoping that is not the case for Twin Mirror. However, it seems that there are only three episodes for this upcoming project.
#11 Hyper Scape
- Developer: Ubisoft
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Platforms: PC
- Release: July 12, 2020
- Co-op: Online
- Competitive Multiplayer: Online
There is a constant flood of battle royale games releasing into the market, all hoping to carve out a slice of the growing community of players. Of course, with each release comes a variety of different mechanics or notable developers to get some attention. In this case, Hyper Scape was quickly taken note of online after being announced by the development studio, Ubisoft. This is a futuristic FPS free-to-play game that is currently set for the PC platform in July. Overall, the game puts players into squads where they are dropped into a big city. Once they land they must quickly gather resources and eliminate the opponents.
Similar to other battle royale games, Hyper Scape’s map will shrink down in size but it’s done so through certain areas of the map being removed randomly rather than a giant closing circle. Furthermore, the game is fast-moving so if you get eliminated you’re not completely out of luck. The downed player can go to a respawn point on the map where a surviving teammate can revive the player. Another interesting aspect that makes this game a bit unique is that there is a big focus around streaming. Viewers watching their favorite streamers playing this game can participate during in-game events which can range from anything like low gravity to infinite ammunition.
