Fortnite: Battle Royale – Everything That’s New In Season 8 | Party Assist, Cannons & More

February 28, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

See how the map in Fortnite: Battle Royale has changed, and check out what’s been added (and removed) in Season 8.

Season 8 of Fortnite: Battle Royale has arrived. While the new Season vaults fan-favorites like the plane, it adds a slew of new pirate-themed features — including an entire new section of the island to explore. The mysterious northeast corner of the island is an overgrown jungle, filled with strange temples that replace the boggy forests of the original map. Now you’ll be able to explore a massive volcano, and launch yourself from cannons mounted to a pirate ship.

There’s a whole lot more to discover in Season 8, so we’re breaking it down. First of all, there is now a Ping System — similar to Apex Legends, you can mark items for your teammates, tell them where to go, and point out enemies on the map. On top of that teamwork enabler, you’ll be able to work together with your friends to complete Battle Pass challenges. It’s not just for solo players anymore.

Everything That’s New In Season 8 | Party Assist, Cannons & More

Season 8 of Fortnite: Battle Royale runs from February 28th to May 8th. This is just the beginning — every Fortnite: Battle Royale season changes as it progresses, so expect to encounter new reveals and map changes in the coming weeks.

New Areas To Explore

Multiple areas have been changed to fit this season’s pirate-y theme. The northeast corner of the map has been completely revamped — kind of like the desert / snow biomes from previous seasons. More specifically, these named areas are now completely different.

  • Wailing Woods has been replaced by Sunny Steps
  • Lazy Links has been replaced by Lazy Lagoon
  • A massive volcano has sprung up in the center.
  • An unnamed temple has appeared.

The volcano is leaking lava toward the center of the map, and features multiple hot air vents you can use to jump high and explore.

Lazy Lagoon features a massive pirate ship parked in the water, complete with pirate cannons you can use to launch friends (or yourself!) to far-off destinations.

Use Hot-Air Vents To Launch Yourself

The deadly lava flowing out of the volcano hurts (at 1 HP damage per tick) when you’re touching the stuff, but the less-dangerous change comes from the hot-air vents. These vents blast you into the sky, allowing you to redeploy your glider and scoot long distances across the map. The vents are everywhere — not just near the volcano.

Become A Human Cannon Ball With Pirate Cannons

Pirate Cannons aren’t just found on the pirate ship in Lazy Lagoon. You’ll find new pirate cannons all over the map. Instead of firing a cannon ball, you’ll fire yourself! When fired, you become a fast-moving ball of destruction, able to smash structures and  damage enemies.

If fired toward a structure, you’ll plow right through multiple levels of walls. When you finally stop, you’ll explore, dealing damage to anyone nearby. Direct shots with the cannon deal 100 damage, while splash damage hits for a hard 50.

You Can Now Complete Challenges With Your Friends

Instead of doing challenges solo to earn those Battle Pass levels, you can now work with your friends. The new Party Assist system lets you work together to complete those challenges — it’s no a strict solo activity anymore. If a friend in your party completes any step of any challenge, you’ll earn those meter-filling scores too.

NOTE: Party Assist only works with friends you invite to the Squad in the Lobby menu. No random players are allowed!
