#11: The Joys Of Taking Joy
The mystery drug that powers the dystopia depicted in We Happy Few is important for your survival. When you’re in Wellington Wells proper, you’re expected to take your joy medication. There are joy dispensers everywhere, but you need to watch out for two events.
- BEWARE: Civilized zones have lots of machines that can sense joy. Avoid Downer Detectors — TV screens will also sniff you out if you’re off joy. Doctors, an enemy that appears later, can also detect if you’re on joy like a machine.
While on joy, the music sounds sweeter, the city streets look more vibrant, and everyone just looks so happy. Some horrific things look more pleasant when you’re on joy. While inside optional houses, look for bonus joy pills — you might need them to get through a downer detector later.
Take too much Joy, and you’ll overdose and forget your memories. There are two negative Joy effects — forgetfulness, from taking too much joy — and withdrawal. Both severely lower your stamina, and make citizens / bobbies hostile to you immediately. If you’re about to crash, it’s better to hide in a trash can and wait the effects out.
#12: Dealing With Bobbies
Bobbies are the towering police that patrol the civilian areas of We Happy Few. These guys are so big, you can’t bring them down through normal means. Nope, you have to fight them using slightly different tactics — just bring liquor! They’re wait too strong to take on in a normal fight.
If you want to get rid of a bobby, approach with Scotch in your inventory, and you can bribe them. While they’re drunk, you can sneak right by and they won’t pay attention.
Eventually, you can also unlock the ability to takedown tall enemies like Bobbies from behind. There are usually too many bobbies to try sneaking, but you’ll surely have a use for this powerful unlock. You need to buy the Bobbie Takedown skill from the skill menu. It’s expensive, as far as points go, but very helpful.
