10 Most Awesomely Patriotic Games You Should Revisit This Fourth of July

July 4, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Between all the BBQ and beer, it’s good to reflect on the true meaning of the Fourth of July — video games! Here are 10 amazing America-tastic games you should play to celebrate.

#5: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

Yes, this is the second game about a Soviet invasion of the United States on this last. No, it won’t be the last. World in Conflict is very, very different from Freedom Fighters – the history isn’t really alternative at all. Instead, this is an almost-realistic look into how WW3 might play out in the ’80ies on a grand scale. You take control of huge armies in RTS combat, constantly calling in off-map support to bolster your forces, or rain down fire from the skies.

The little details are what matter here – how we learn about characters before their heroic sacrifices, and how much time is spent with soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Before the climactic invasion of Seattle, you’re treated to one of the most awesome cutscenes in any game – with a Preacher that belts out an inspirational sermon, letting us know that “We shall prevail!” from a bombed-out newsroom. It’s the sort of scene you won’t find anywhere else.

#6: Last Alert

From the serious, to the not-so-serious. Last Alert puts you in the Rambo-lite shoes of Guy Kazama as he fights the enemies of America, saves the president, and stops an evil science man’s plans from his moon base cloning facility.

There’s action (with multiple levels of spread shot), suspense (the president is taken hostage, and there’s even a body double boss fight), and hilarity – namely, the weird ranks you’ll earn for blasting an endless stream of bad guys from a Contra top-down perspective. Who doesn’t want to be a Full Metal Warrior?
