#15 Battlefield 1
- Developer: EA DICE
- Publisher: Electronic Arts
Battlefield 1 gained widespread attention when it was first revealed by EA DICE. The video game would turn away from modern and futuristic time periods that Battlefield along with the Call of Duty franchise had been turning towards. Instead, Battlefield 1 takes place during the First World War.
While keeping up with the same elements and mechanics that fans of the Battlefield franchise have been used to, Battlefield 1 showcases period-accurate weapons and vehicles. Players will use bolt-action rifles, artillery, mustard gas, along with tanks, horses, zeppelins, and more.
Outside of the multiplayer component of Battlefield 1, there is a campaign that will feature six different characters each with their own war story, told through the eyes of separate soldier nationalities.
#14 Horizon Zero Dawn
- Developer: Guerrilla Games
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Horizon Zero Dawn is the first IP developed by Guerrilla Games since their release of Killzone in 2004. This is an action role-playing video game title that is set a thousand years into the future.
Mankind has mysteriously fallen, with cities only a shell of a once thriving society. Now only small tribal groups remain where giant mechanical beasts roam the world freely in charge. The plot revolves around a female hunter named Aloy who sets out on a journey to explore the open world, meet with other tribes, find out who her mother was, learn of the reason mankind fell along with her true origins.
#13 Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Developer: Square Enix
- Publisher: Square Enix
For years fans of the Final Fantasy franchise have been begging Square Enix to bring out a proper remake of the Final Fantasy VII installment which launched back on the original PlayStation console. The series has had quite a few iconic video games over the years but easily one of the most recognizable installments was Final Fantasy VII featuring Cloud as he embarks on a journey against a mega-corporation. It wouldn’t be until 2020 that we got the first part of a Final Fantasy VII Remake. That’s right, the first part and at the time of writing this, we don’t know just how many parts the game will actually be before the game storyline concludes.
There are some changes to the gameplay to keep things a bit more modern. Rather than being a typical turn-based combat RPG, it’s an action-RPG with gameplay similar to the likes of Kingdom Hearts if you’re familiar with that franchise. Again, I’m going to refrain from spoiling anything here, but whether you’re a veteran fan of the original RPG installment or a newcomer, this is one game that’s worth playing.
#12 Doom Eternal
- Developer: id Software
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
The 2016 reboot of Doom really brought a big resurgence to the video game franchise. Players take the role of Doom Guy as he embarks on a mission to slaughter all the demons that invaded the military base in space. If you’re familiar with Doom at all then you can expect some over-the-top action-packed moments. However, without spoiling too much, Doom Eternal takes place after the events of the 2016 reboot where a demonic invasion has hit Earth. Now Doom Guy is humanity’s last chance of survival.
Doom Eternal certainly turns things up for players with more demonic enemies, new weapons, and even abilities. In fact, Doom Eternal really throws in some additional platforming areas for players. One of the elements that the developer’s id Software wanted to make sure they nailed with the follow-up title for Doom was post-launch content. It was clear that fans really wanted to spend more time with the IP after the 20126 game campaign ended, but id Software didn’t plan for the post-launch content initially. Now with Doom Eternal, we’re getting DLC with one of the first being dubbed The Ancient Gods which will take place after the events of Doom Eternal, but I’ll refrain from spoiling anything here.
#11 Call of Duty Warzone
- Developer: Infinity Ward, Raven Software
- Publisher: Activision
There has been quite the influx of battle royale games added into the marketplace. With the genre blowing up, it can be tough sifting through the games to find some of the better titles out there. However, there are some games that will get instant attention such as Call of Duty Warzone. It was rumored after the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that there was a battle royale game mode in the works. It turns out that the rumors were true and not only was this post-launch game mode was a battle royale, but it was also made to be free-to-play for everyone. You didn’t need Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to enjoy the multiplayer battle royale.
It’s your typical battle royale game where you can go in different sets of teams or even solo on a massive map. From there, it’s a race to acquire some of the best gear available and take out the competition. Furthermore, just like all the other battle royale games, players will find that the map will consistently shrink over time, forcing players to move closer together on the map. To top it off, this game will also find added content to reflect other Call of Duty titles released into the market so you can expect Call of Duty Warzone to be around for a awhile.
