XCOM 2 First Week Sales Beat Rise Of The Tomb Raider On PC

February 10, 2016 by Carlos Chism

The new strategy title has done pretty well for itself so far.

SteamSpy has updated its sales data for XCOM 2 after five days on the market. So far, the game has sold over 563,000 units at the average price of $59.99. This is a pretty big number, especially when you compare it to Rise of the Tomb Raider‘s numbers during its first full week, which finished at 323,000 units. Lara Croft’s new adventure was released a little over a week before XCOM‘s return to steam and has sold a total of 419,000 copies on the digital platform so far (via GearSiege) .

While these numbers may not be surprising to any XCOM or Firaxis fans out there, the numbers do offer an interesting comparison to make between both games. Considering that 2013 Tomb Raider reboot has moved 4.2 million units on PC in the three years it’s been released. These numbers could possibly seen validation for Firaxis’ choice to keep the game exclusive to PC. At the same time, the comparison adds onto the vague but meager picture we have about Rise of the Tomb Raider’s success as an Xbox One timed exclusive. The closest to solid numbers we have is that the game sold more than one million copies on Microsoft’s console. It also launched on the same day as Fallout 4, which most likely impacted sales.

XCOM 2’s sales numbers aren’t the only indication of the game’s success. The permadeath strategy title already has a burgeoning mod scene, with some pretty creative mods like the adorable corgi gun. The game has also seen almost universal critical acclaim.

Are you enjoying either XCOM 2 or Rise of the Tomb Raider? Do these sales numbers surprise you? Let us know in the comments.
