Marvel’s Spider-Man is a single-player experience, just like its spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales. If the games respectively follow Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their adventures, it seems that Insomniac Games worked on a multiplayer mode featuring both Spider-Men.
Twitter user DniweTamp dug up new evidence that shows that Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered could have supported a multiplayer mode. In the PC version’s executable file, a few lines of text hint at a multiplayer version of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
The first image shows that Peter Parker and Miles Morales could compete to become the “Superior Spider-Man.” The game file includes the text for both Peter and Miles being this “Superior Spider-Man” as the “winner message,” implying a competition between the two Spideys.
DniweTamp also found mentions of a “Red Team” and “Blue Team,” hinting at a PvP mode in Marvel’s Spider-Man. The exact details of this competitive mode are still blurry since the two Spider-Men are not enemies. It could be mini-challenges like the Spider-Training from Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but we will probably never know their true nature.
The second picture directly mentions a co-op feature in Marvel’s Spider-Man. It shows some text that should appear for “Character2,” meaning there would be two players in the same session: probably one playing as Peter Parker, while the other is Miles Morales. The two friendly neighborhood spiders would then be able to swing through the streets of New York City together, defeating their enemies as a team. This would be just like in the introduction of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, except that instead of having an AI version of Peter Parker, another player could put on this suit.
Could Spider-Man 2 Feature a Multiplayer Mode?
Despite these shreds of evidence that Insomniac Games worked on a multiplayer version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, this feature never saw the light of day. Marvel’s Spider-Man and its spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales are both single-player adventures, even if the two Spideys hang out together.
Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy and Studio Relations at Insomniac Games, described Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as “their most epic single-player adventure yet.” If the game is indeed a single-player experience, this means the multiplayer mode didn’t make it to the final version of the game. Insomniac Games considered adding this feature, so we can hope it will come out eventually.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a PlayStation 5 exclusive coming out in 2023. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered reached Steam and the Epic Games Store on August 12, 2022. Chances are Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will also swing its way to PC eventually, but PC gamers will have to wait a little longer before playing the game.
