Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is the long-awaited sequel to the original 2008 title Mount and Blade (which received a standalone expansion Mount and Blade: Warband in 2010). The game allows players to take on the role of an army commander in a fictional medieval setting.

Players will conquer and invest in territory, fight bandits and enemy armies, and recruit companions to lead their own armies, all under the command of the player.

Bannerlord includes a new story about a young upstart trying to rebuild their clan. Along the way, players are tasked with restoring the legendary “Dragon Banner,” the holder of which is prophesied to rebuild the Calradian Empire.

But at its heart, Mount and Blade is more of a sandbox. If it’s your prerogative to become a wealthy merchant, hauling a caravan full of wine and butter up and down the continent, you can. If you want to pledge allegiance to one of the greater factions, you can.

Bannerlord includes multiple new activities that were less fleshed out or entirely absent in the original. You can forge and sell custom weapons, or become a slumlord and quarrel with other criminals in large cities. There’s never a lack of things to do.

Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord was released as an Early Access title back in 2020 and is still considered Early Access at the time of writing. With a console release coming this October, we might finally get to see the game in a near-finished state.
