Hellblade Development Video Reveals Use of Third-Person Shoulder Camera

November 12, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

Ninja Theory discusses the development of Hellblade.

The current generation of games seems to be picking up speed at quite a fast pace. Next week, we've got both Dragon Age: Inquisition and Far Cry 4 coming out and next year there will be whole host of new games to choose from. Among these titles is one developed by Ninja Theory. The game is called Hellblade, and a new video reveals a lot of information regarding the Playstation 4 exclusive title.

According to Ninja Theory devs who speak in the video, Hellblade is being crafted on a much smaller budget than previous games that the studio has created. Not only is there a smaller budget, but it appears that the studio has shrank a bit since the days of Heavenly Sword. While we don't honestly think that this will put a huge dent in whatever Ninja Theory makes for us, it has changed the way their team looks at game development.

One such change comes in the form of Hellblade's camera. While Heavenly Sword featured a sort of 'on-rails' system, which followed the player through a predetermined set of zones, Hellblade will be using a third-person camera. This over-the-shoulder view is the result of the tighter budget Ninja Theory is currently having to utilize, as they simply can't afford to have entire teams working on complex camera systems.

They've also streamlined development on Hellblade by changing up the way combat is coded. They've found a way to string together animations, so that there's actually no coding involved when it comes to tweaking combat. We're not expert game developers, but this sounds like a pretty big step forward in budget game development.

Look for Hellblade on the Playstation 4 next year.
