Why Lords of the Fallen Isn’t a Dark Souls Clone

May 8, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Producer admits From Software’s games have influenced the ARPG but they’re still very different.

CI Games' producer Tomasz Gop has told DigitalSpy what makes upcoming ARPG Lords of the Fallen different from Dark Souls.

Gop says combat, which he describes as "the most prominent feature," is not at like the action you'd find in From Software's games. Describing the influences which have shaped Lords of the Fallen, Gop commented:

"There are a lot of inspirations in this game – and everybody can see that – and I'm not going to be hiding that.

"There are fighting games like Tekken and Street Fighter, there are elements of Souls games and so on, and we definitely try to nail the elements that bumped the feeling of the game being punishing for a lot of players, especially for people who don't treat games like 600-page books, where they have to bite nails into it.

"But rather, more like an action movie – we're an action RPG and I believe that Lords is more on the action side of that."

Like Dark Souls, Lords of the Fallen will only sparingly use cutscenes and CI Games doesn't want to create a narrative driven game. He explained:

"We're not trying to impose the story, which would probably be expected from a heavily story-driven game but at the same time, we want to keep what the orthodox RPG fans would expect from a decent RPG."

Lords of the Fallen is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and should be released before the end of the year. If you missed it, here's the latest gameplay trailer.
