Watch Dogs Multiplayer is Based Around ‘Hyperconnectivity’

February 22, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

Some form of multiplayer will be in Watch Dogs.

Watch Dogs

Like the Assassin's Creed series of games, Watch Dogs will come with built-in multiplayer modes to extend the life of the game and encourage what the studio calls "hyperconnectivity". After all, it would be amiss if the game, which is set in the modern world and is based on topics like hacking and social media, failed to have any online functions of its own.

Speaking to Kotaku's Evan Narcisse, the game's creative director Jonathan Morin revealed a little about the multiplayer mode that Watch Dogs will have to offer, in connection with its presence on the PlayStation 4.

"Watch Dogs is all about hyperconnectivity," said Morin. "To me, that has to mean all the time and anywhere. So yes, other people are out there all the time, when you don’t expect it. Whether you’re playing single-player or multiplayer, it’s happening. You’re saying asynchronous but it’s much more real-time than that…"

What I can deduce from his interview is that Watch Dogs will come with some built-in functionality for social networking, allowing players to perhaps interact with each other through the system. Wait, what does that even mean? I have no idea.

Hopefully the studio releases more details about its multiplayer functionality beyond buzzwords like "hyperconnectivity".

It's out later this year for the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and PS4.
