Last year, an observant Redditor spotted a presentation titled ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ on a Montreal subway, sending Tomb Raider fans into speculative overdrive. Although Square Enix is yet to confirm the third game in the revamped Tomb Raider franchise (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider), an undisclosed source told Kotaku that it “is indeed the name”. Now the latest issue of OPM (Official PlayStation Magazine UK) is suggesting that Shadow of the Tomb Raider may “be released early in 2018”.
Based on the release schedule of the previous two titles, TR in 2013 and ROTTR in 2015, the proposed release frame seems legitimate. However, little has been shown in the way of development and without any official announcements, it’s difficult to conclude anything with certainty. Just recently, head of Eidos Montreal (responsible for co-developing ROTTR) quashed rumours of an upcoming Thief game – so the same thing could happen here.
In addition to the desire for people to finally get Lara’s name right, fans on NeoGAF said they wanted a greater focus on puzzle elements in the latest Tomb Raider game.
