All things considered, the Xbox Wireless Controller might prove more popular that the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The Xbox Wireless Controller has the more ostentatious design, with the characteristic grey-green color scheme we have grown to expect from the Doomguy, and it can certainly pass for a controller for the non-Doom Slayer version. It’s also the regular controller that actually has the ABXY letters replaced with lettering from the Sentinel alphabet.
If you were curious, id artist Emerson Tung actually shared the Sentinel alphabet on his Artstation four years ago, and included this description:
Rune, sigils and writings based on a fictional language I came up for the Sentinel race in DOOM Eternal.
These can be seen used in maps such as Taras Nabad, Sentinel Prime and Exultia.
The Sentinel language was influenced and inspired by Aramaic, Arabic and the elvish language from Tolkien stories.
The Elite controller will definitely still have its fans, and we imagine a lot of the hardcore Doom players will pick up both controllers. As strange as it sounds, it’s a relief to see that Microsoft has seen that fans do want to buy branded merchandise like this.
While some will criticize the industry for catering to the consumer impulse to collect, this demand is coming from the fact that Microsoft was actually gatekeeping these items from the general public. A lot of content creators, some of whom not quite popular with all gamers, were hoarding these collectibles instead. It really was about time that Microsoft capitalized (pun intended) on the fandom for the games they now own and have responsibility for.
Hopefully this turns out to be so successful that Microsoft decides to make even more of these branded merchandise, to the point that they won’t even be limited edition anymore. If there was one thing Microsoft could have been doing so plainly to increase Xbox console sales, this was clearly it.
