Despite earlier reports that Borderlands 3 was in development at Gearbox, the studio's boss Randy Pitchford refuted those claims on Twitter.
"Chill out internet. No one has started working on a sequel to Borderlands 2," he wrote. "It's fun to talk and think, but actual effort is focused on Borderlands 2 DLC, Aliens, etc."
"Clean and Simple truth: The only Borderlands related game development work going on right now is for Borderlands 2. I expect that to change at some point, but that is the state of the box at this moment in time."
Pitchford clarified that the game's lead writer Anthony Burch was simply speaking to his thoughts and that it's exciting to think about Borderlands 3, but that there's no actual effort being put into the development of the game just yet. Pitchford was referring to the interview the game's lead writer Anthony Burch gave, which prompted these reports.
While we're disappointed to know that the studio isn't actively developing a Borderlands threequel (that's a word now), we're more than happy that they're working on additional content for the newly released Borderlands 2. Let's hope they manage to create enough content to last a year.
