Sealark: Fish, Love and Dire Consequences Make This Game Super Charming

September 18, 2012 by Patricia Hernandez

SUPPORT THIS KICKSTARTER OR I WILL KILL YOU…um, please consider supporting this game!

Okay. I know that you must be up to your ears in games you should totally fund on Kickstarter. You're sick of Kickstarter. You may even need to see some releases from the funding over there to be confident enough to ever invest in another game. I get it.

And you may click on the Kickstarter of this game and be like, hey, this has already met its goal! But listen to me, damnit. Sealark needs to reach its stretch goals. I've not officially, personally, supported a Kickstarter project until now, but this is different.

First off, look at these visuals. Few things even approximate how charming the art is–and there's more that you should check out on the Kickstarter page. The developer is a great pixel artist. But beyond that, the game is about a girl who likes to fish. She's the last fisherwoman in the world, which is now populated by fish people. Fish people you can fish or…date. (Please tell me you can date that giant squid there and it's not just something that can utterly destroy you…!) It's supposed to be an adventure game that takes cues from Earthbound, Homestuck, Cave Story and Harvest Moon. Tell me that doesn't sound amazing.

Joshua Cross, the developer, describes the game himself as such:

It's about fishing a bunch of fish, meeting a bunch of folks, solving some tough puzzles, beating up some bosses, and a little dating if that's the kind of fisherman you are.

And it'll aim to have

  • Lots of fish to catch; lots of bosses to defeat!
  • Big open world to explore!
  • Tell an involved, complex, story with a cast of eccentric characters.
  • Over 16 characters to befriend, antagonize, or even court.
  • The friends and rivals you make will shape how your story unfolds.
  • Don't let it take itself too seriously!

If it reaches its 20k stretch goal, we'll seasons, Mac and Linux support, game manual, weather and news, and television channels. It is important and neccesary that we have all of these, you see. So go and support this fantastic looking game here.
