343 Industries has put together a new edition of their behind-the-scenes look at Halo 4 which closely examines how the studio’s designers, artists, engineers and production staff created a new race of enemies for the game.
The new video discusses the design challenges that 343 faced during their creation of the new race and the goals they planned to accomplish by introducing them into the Halo universe.
“There’s a degree of animalistic fierceness that maybe you didn’t see in previous games,†says 343 Art Director Kenneth Scott of the new race of Prometheans. “Anyone who plays Halo goes, ‘Forerunners are the silver angular stuff with blue lights across it.’ That’s really the language kind of in a nutshell. For us it was important for us to break that, but still find kind of a mathematical organization.â€
The developers talk about how they designed the new race of Prometheans mindful to the architecture around them. Rather than operating independently, the Prometheans will operate as a singular, cohesive force in battle against the Master Chief, with the various classes of units always in support of each other.
“We wanted to create something that could stand alone, and be an enemy that is just as challenging, just as engaging as the Covenant has been in the past for Halo,†says 343 Creative Director Josh Holmes.
Together with the UNSC, Master Chief will face down the threat of the Prometheans in the upcoming game.
Halo 4 is slated for release on the Xbox 360 on November 6, 2012.
