Nintendo President Releases Statement Over Weak Switch Launch Line-Up Criticism

February 3, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

Here’s what Nintendo’s president has to say about lack of Switch launch titles.

There’s been plenty of talk online regarding the upcoming Nintendo console, the Nintendo Switch. One of the bigger issues that some gamers are taking from the upcoming console launch is the fact that there are not too many titles to be excited about during the initial launch. This is one issue that seems to have struck a slight nerve with Nintendo as the president Tatsumi Kimishima, gave a statement regarding the topic during an earnings call, which was reported by GameSpot.

The main titles to launch directly from Nintendo during their upcoming console release are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch. This does not include the few other third-party titles such as Skylanders: Imaginators and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+.

With few titles being offered from the start, gamers may not feel swayed to pick up a console especially since the bundles being released by Nintendo doesn’t offer any software, to begin with, which essentially forces gamers to purchase a launch title separately.

According to the president of Nintendo, this is all part of their plan to continue releasing video game titles steadily over time.

“Some of those who have seen this line-up have expressed the opinion that the launch line-up is weak. Our thinking in arranging the 2017 software lineup is that it is important to continue to provide new titles regularly without long gaps. This encourages consumers to continue actively playing the system, maintains buzz, and spurs continued sales momentum for Nintendo Switch.”

This is one issue that may have been present during the Nintendo Wii U lifecycle. With few titles being offered regularly, long gaps could also spell trouble for the company and their upcoming console release. Instead of putting their total focus on a strong software launch, Nintendo is thinking ahead and offering gamers plenty of big name video game titles keeping players interested in the console regularly. For now, only time may tell if this will work in Nintendo’s favor.
