How soon? By the time you read this, the game might be out already. Reportedly to launch on September 6th for iPhone and iPad, Terry Cavanagh–creator of VVVVVV–released a trailer for Super Hexagon. Check it above.
Super Hexagon is Cavanagh's latest, and its a kind of like the older Hexagon, only, you know…Super. Bigger! Better! More Jenn Frank telling you to try again and kind of reinforcing the idea that you're terrible at this game!
It's hard to describe Super Hexagon, though I just (happily) lost about two hours of my life to it. Terry calls it a "minimal action game." You're using your reflexes to try to avoid the edges of various geometric shapes, which sounds boring, right? Except this is one of the most addicting games I've played this year….and given Cavanagh's previous games, it should surprise no one that Super Hexagon is also devilishly difficult. That's part of the charm.
It's simple to pick up and play, and though you might lose right away, you keep having the feeling that you can do better…so you try again, and you try again, and eventually a couple of hours have passed. And each 'game' lasts from 3 to 30 seconds. It's ridiculous.
It's probably best if you just watch the trailer though. Then you can see this in action, and listen to the great soundtrack….which is now etched into my brain. Catchy stuff, that.
First week out you can grab it for less than a buck on a sale. After that, the game will cost ya $2.99. No reason why you shouldn't pick it up right away: it's excellent, addictive, and cheaper that way. Get to it!
And if you're really unsure? Just try out the previous PC version. It'll give you a taste of what you can expect from Super, though Terry's states that Super Hexagon will also eventually see a PC/Mac release.
