Not content to simply offer players with secret worlds to unlock in New Super Mario Bros 2, Nintendo has added new Rainbow Levels for you to unlock and experience.
These special levels can’t be found on any of the overland map’s paths, but you can get to them by playing through ANY level in the game, including Mushroom World, Flower World, and Star World. Once you unlock these levels, they’ll be available on the overland map for you to revisit.
To unlock a Rainbow Level on any of the game’s nine worlds, you’ll have to make sure that the time counter on the top-right corner of the screen shares the same last two digits as the world you’re in when you jump onto the flagpole. Take note that only the two last digits matter.
For example, if you’re in World 1, make sure the last two digits ends in ’11’. If you’re in World 2, the two digits will have to read ’22’. I’m sure you get the idea. If you’re successful, a fireworks display and a rainbow will appear on the screen indicating a successful unlock.
You’ll only be able to play through the Rainbow Level one time after you’ve opened it. To revisit the level, you’ll need to unlock it again.
They're great places to stock up on coins.
