In early August, Sony's Studio President Shuhei Yoshida said that the Vita desperately needed third-party support and with the Sony handheld's impressive showing at Gamescom 2012, it seems that things are on the up-and-up. Sony is now reporting summer sales figures topping 2.2 million units sold.
Speaking with Joystiq, an SCEE rep said, "The latest figures we've released for Vita (as of June 30th) are 2.2. million sales worldwide."
In May, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said that the Vita had sold 1.8 million units worldwide, spelling out sales numbers of 400k units moved since then. For comparative purposes, Nintendo's 3DS has sold a total of 6.68 million units worldwide. The 3DS is still outselling the Vita by a wide margin, but hopefully the newly announced Vita titles will create a positive feedback loop – enticing more gamers will buy the handheld, then more motivated developers to create new titles.
With sales numbers on the rise, a price drop for the handheld isn't in the cards for the near future. Maybe when the holiday season swings around, Sony will surprise us all with an early xmas gift – a cheaper and more robust Vita.
