Battlefield 4 Still Set in Modern Warfare Setting, Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

August 13, 2012 by Alex Co

DICE has revealed that Battlefield 4 will still use the "modern warfare" setting, it also celebrates the game’s 10th year anniversary.

During the Game Developers Conference in Europe earlier today, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson took to the stage to celebrate DICE's 20th year anniversary and Battlefield's 10th year anniversary.

Battlefield is, of course, the studio's flagship franchise.

KM Troedsson also revealed that the series itself has "served" more than 50 million players across all games to date. Not only that, but he admits that DICE is "still in love" with the franchise after all these years.

Aside from the anniversary, Troedsson also reveals that Battlefield 4 will still be set in a "modern" setting (read: modern warfare). This, of  course, is the same setting used by Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3. People were speculating that DICE might try going back to the future route a la Battlefield 2142 for Battlefield 4.

There's a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans' feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It's not just one single thing…And, yes, I know Battlefield 4 is probably the most creative name we ever could come up with. I can't comment any more on that games because it's all secret.

Troedsson also added, "We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is. We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

In related news, Troedsson also issued a comment regarding the Battlefield franchise's spin-off — Bad Company series. While the general manager wouldn't divulge any other details on Battlefield 4, he did state, "That doesn't mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future."

Well. that dashes Battlefield fans' 2142 dreams, no? Of course that doesn't mean they can't make an expansion to that, right? While Treyarch might be going the near future route with Black Ops II, Battlefield fans will have to contend a bit more on the modern warfare setting…but hey, at least the Bad Company series isn't dead, right?

Are you okay with Battlefield 4 going the modern warfare route still or would you rather it showcase a futuristic warfare setting? Come to think of it, would you be fine if it went back to World War II?
