Katamari Damacy Displayed in Museum of Modern Art

July 30, 2012 by Jen Shaffer

It’s inevitable that the King of All Cosmos forces the Prince to roll up all art contained within.

The Museum of Modern Art is joining the ranks of establishments showcasing the artistic merit of video games. The "Century of the Child: Growing by Design" exhibit is showing off the striking Katamari Damacy. The installation is an "overview of the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood as a paradigm for progressive design thinking." It aims to examine oft-ignored aspects of design in our everyday life.

The exhibit displays school architecture, clothing, playgrounds, toys and games, children’s hospitals and safety equipment, nurseries, furniture, and books, all in the name of forward design. The PlayStation 2 version of Katamari Damacy – originally released in 2004 – will be in the Toys and Games design section.

In our current culture, the question of "Are video games art?" is seeing a much more decisive answer. Museums are coming out of the woodwork, showcasing the efforts of dedicated developers to the general public. If you happen to be in New York City, be sure to swing by the Museum of Modern Art and check out the exhibit, which is on display until November 5, 2012.
