Tomb Raider Reboot Penned By Mirror’s Edge Writer

July 12, 2012 by Lana Polansky

Rhianna Pratchett has been working on the game since its early stages.

Developer Crystal Dynamics has announced that the head writer on the upcoming Tomb Raider is none other than Rhianna Pratchett, veteran videogame writer and story designer for first-person parkour game Mirror's Edge.

"Rhianna has been working on the game with the narrative from its early inception," said Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher, adding,

"She has brought a unique perspective to the project and helped us explore the character origins of Lara Croft. There is no doubt that Rhianna has brought a depth and credibility to Lara, a heroine who will really connect with today's gamers."

Pratchett considers herself to be quite a fan of the character, saying, "I grew up playing Tomb Raider, uncovering the world's secrets and unearthing its treasures; I have lived and died as Lara Croft, but nothing comes close to the challenge of re-writing her."

"Seldom do we get the opportunity to re-imagine and reinvent a legend, so getting my narrative hands on Miss Croft was a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. It was going back to the genesis of video game action heroines and exploring how to make such an iconic character meaningful and relatable for gamers today."

Tomb Raider has become somewhat infamous recently for comments made by executive producer Ron Rosenberg. Rosenberg stated that Lara would be the victim of an attempted rape and that it would make the player feel compelled to "protect" her. Crystal Dyanmics has since denied that sexual assault will be a part of the story and insist that Rosenberg misspoke.

The game is set for release on March 5, 2013.
