Sony has revealed that its upcoming console, the PS4 Pro, will sport an extra 1 gigabyte of RAM in addition to its already announced specifications.
The company’s lead system architect Mark Cerny told IGN that the additional RAM is DRAM, which is slower than the GDDR5 used to power graphics and processing on the system, but will still provide a boost to performance.
“We felt games needed a little more memory, about 10 percent more, so we added about 1GB of slow, conventional DRAM to the console,” he said.
Cerny states that the additional memory will be used to store background applications to speed up switching to games instead of using the GDDR5 memory pool for it, so games have a gigabyte of memory to use exclusively for games.
The PS4 Pro launches on November 10 for $400. It comes with a 1TB hard drive that can be replaced with a hard drive of your own, much like the regular PS4 and the PS3 prior to that. The new hard drive uses a faster 6 Gb/s interface that’s double the transfer speed of what’s in the basic PS4.
