Back in early June, on an Origin livechat, Gearbox producer Brian Burleson was asked if the developer planned to implement any playable female characters in Aliens: Colonial Marines.
"No, no we don't," he replied, adding, "There's lots of girls in the game, actually. It's not just all guys or anything."
Among those who found this odd was Melissa K, (otherwise known as MOOSH89) who soon thereafter posted a petition to have a playable female character included in the game.
On the official Colonial Marines forums, Melissa posted: "The Aliens franchise is dominated by strong females such as Ripley, Vasquez, Ferro, Dietrich and most importantly, the Queen."
Melissa, as it turns out, was far from alone on this one. The petition has spiked to 1,609 signatures–well over its 1,000-signature goal. Melissa also wrote,
"We believe Aliens is the perfect starting point for developers to start including playable females in more multiplayer shooters… There are many females that enjoy playing video games and are fans of the films who are tired of playing as a male all the time. Let's let Gearbox Software see how important this is to the Aliens franchise!"
Eurogamer has approached both Gearbox and Sega but has yet to receive a response.
