Given the current state of affairs when it comes to Steam’s Early Access program and video game development, it’s always encouraging to see another contender make it to the finish line. As it applies to Kim, the indie RPG title is set for a full and official launch in two weeks. From Kickstarted beginnings this past December, The Secret Games Company is nearly ready to go with this one. To introduce you to the game in the meantime, they have put out a new trailer.
The game is set in the fictional world based on Rudyard Kipling’s India, as he envisioned it in his novel of the same name. The events of the book take place in the country of India after the Second Afghan War in 1881, leading up to the start of the Third War up through 1893. The protagonist, Kimball O’Hara, is an orphaned Irish street beggar living under India during the late 19th century. He grows up being raised by a Tibetan Lama who teaches him the cultural fundamentals of India’s history, culminating on a journey through the Grand Trunk Road. Kim ends up being enlisted into the military by old associates of his father, who was a soldier. They teach Kim how to be a professional spy, all the meanwhile he holds onto the spiritual connections he made during his time traveling with the Lama. The soldier and spirit parts of his life clash into each other after Kim encounters Russian spies in the Himalayas. In the game, you’ll play as Kim throughout these adventures. The procedurally generated world is meant to serve as a backdrop to the ability of retelling this classic tale of combat and survival over and over.
Kim releases on October 24th for PC (Mac). To learn more about the game, check out the developer’s website, Twitter, and Facebook.
