Shigeru Miyamoto Elaborates on His Future During Nintendo Shareholders Meeting

The designer and producer promises a change in focus, but not retirement.

Shigeru Miyamoto may not be retiring just yet, but at a recent Nintendo shareholders meeting, the iconic game designer clarified some of his future plans at the company.

A transcription of the meeting cites Miyamoto as saying,

“Among these big things in our future prospects, it is so important to carefully choose the next project, and I myself have decided on a specific project like the network issue mentioned before. As I would like people working on each project to be able to do that kind of thing by themselves in the future, I repeatedly say to them that today might be my last day at Nintendo and work with them today at the forefront of development. However, I enjoy creating things and will be in active service at Nintendo for the time being.”

Miyamoto, who is “careful” to note that while he may someday choose to leave the company, is not establishing any explicit plans for retirement. He says that he is still interested in the “creative side,” diverting his attention away from ingrained franchises like Mario Kart or Super Mario and focusing it on smaller or newer projects in which he sees great potential, citing his work on Audioguide Louvre – Nintendo 3DS.
