Nintendo Think You’ll Be Surprised by Wii U Pricing

June 8, 2012 by Mat Growcott

There was a lot of things we didn’t learn about the Wii U at this years E3, a worrying concept considering it’s supposedly less than six months from release. The biggest mystery? The console’s price, but Nintendo don’t think you should worry.

We knew we weren't going to be told how much we'll be paying for the Wii U at the end of the year and we got our hopes up anyway. After seeing new Mario games and understanding the breadth of third party studios looking to bring their games (even if they're just ports) to Nintendo's new system, it was difficult to not start hoping for a price.

Well, in an interview with GamesIndustry, Reggie Fils-Aime said that consumers will be surprised by the launch point of the Wii U.

"Nintendo believes in being a mass market product," he explained, "so unlike our competitors when they've launched historical systems to maybe start at a really high price and work their way down, we don't believe in that. We want to launch at a price that's going to represent an ongoing great value.

"You look at the Wii; Wii stayed at $250 for a really long time, and so we're going to give that same level of thought to the Wii U. How do we launch at a value that we're going to be able to sustain for a long time? I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, if you will, about the way we're managing the value equation."
