If you can recall back to E3 2011, Ubisoft revealed a trailer for their upcoming Rainbow Six: Patriots title. This would have been the first Rainbow Six game to release after the franchise was in limbo for years, nearing a decade. However, after a few years into development, the title was scrapped and rebranded as Rainbow Six: Siege. Now we’re finally getting some more details as to why the game was ultimately tossed away in favor for a new direction and rebranding.
GameSpot had the opportunity to speak with Alex Remy, the director of Rainbow Six’s brand. It was through this conversation that more details arose about Ubisoft’s cancellation of Rainbow Six: Patriots. As it turns out, the developers pulled the plug simply to double down their efforts in releasing a more multiplayer focused video game.
Rainbow Six: Patriots looked rather interesting when it was first revealed, however, the game was very story-driven. This was something that would have hindered Ubisoft’s vision to see Rainbow Six as an eSpot’s title.
“In terms of design, direction, and vision, Patriots was much more a story-driven, narrative-driven game With Rainbow Six Siege we sort of took a very, very different position and vision at the time. We really flipped in terms of vision and direction. Even on the team side of things, in early 2013, we were 25 people. And pretty much the whole 25 people were new to Rainbow; they were not people from Patriots except a couple of us.”
It would be interesting to see just how the story was shaping up for Rainbow Six: Patriots. Regardless, Rainbow Six: Siege is still going strong with a new DLC being released today known as Skull Rain. You can pick up the title today for the Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4.
