The 2D 16-bit action platformer adventure FOX n FORESTS jumped into the Kickstarter scene just a few short days ago to raise money for their game. With $34,000 raised already, it looks like the developers at Bonus Level Entertainment have smooth sailing ahead of them when it comes to their $105,345 total goal.
To let you know about what kind of game you’re getting into here, they put a reveal trailer going over the basics.
According to Bonus Level Entertainment Co-Founder Rupert Ochsner: “Our Goal is to reinvent 16-Bit gaming by merging a nostalgic look and feel with modern game design. We love retro games and the idea for FOX n FORESTS came up over 10 years ago. Now we are finally making our dream a reality.”
Your hero? His name is Rick the Fox. He’s equipped with a magic crossbow that not only doubles as a melee and ranged weapon, but has the power to change seasons on demand (more on that later). Rick is on a quest to stop the evil forces at work manipulating the seasons for personal gains, causing the woodland creatures to mutate as the result of an absurd effort to make a 5th season.
The main feature of FOX n FORESTS is the ability to switch seasons on demand in order to navigate through the game’s levels. Given the game’s setting being a forest, this season switching will have a maximum impact on the environment and what new paths open up to the protagonist. The skill elements, like jumping and shooting, are balanced against the RPG aspects (Upgrading, Search and Collect), but the season changing will add the twist to the formula. Want to cross a lake? Switch to Winter and “Boom” it’s frozen solid.
In a statement from the other Co-Founder of Bonus Level Entertainment, Holger Kuchling: “The team of Bonus Level Entertainment grew up on games of the 80s and 90s, and some of us already worked in the industry back then. So we definitely know where we are coming from and what we are doing. The game is inspired by the glorious days of 16-Bit and all time classics such as Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Wonder Boy in Monster World and ActRaiser 2 as well as the Castlevania and Zelda series.”

There’s plans for a Steam Version, as well as DRM free copies for PC, Linux, and Mac. But the developers have their sights set on releasing to consoles as well: listing PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and NX as their plans.
