EA Wants to Turn Franchises Into Online Universes, Persistent Services

April 20, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

EA has plans to make each of its games a part of a larger, persistent service.

Electronic Arts has big plans for its numerous franchises. Big plans.

Speaking at the recent UK showcase event this week, EA's Keith Ramsdale said that the company had every intention to turn its game franchises, including Battlefield, FIFA, Medal of Honor, Star Wars, The Sims, and Need for Speed into online universes replete with interconnectivity features to support each game in their ever-growing list of games.

The concept is to reconcile the game of every franchise into a single universe, using EA's profile system.

"Imagine a player gets up in the morning, plays an online match on his 360 before going to work," he said of FIFA by way of example. "On the bus, on his way to work, he practices his free kicks on his tablet. At lunch he looks at the transfer window on his PC. On the way home he chooses his kit on his smartphone.

"Here's the thing: when he gets home to play again on his 360 that evening, all those achievements and upgrades will be alive in his game."

Marketing speak aside, EA's announcement is unsurprising, especially given the company's move towards turning its products into services.
