Sony isn’t showcasing its upgraded PlayStation 4 console at E3 this week—which seemed like an odd decision given Microsoft’s major console reveals.
However, it was all part of Sony’s plan, Sony global head of marketing and sales Jim Ryan said. The company wanted to focus on its “pure story” about its video games.
“We had such a strong, and, I’d say, pure story about games,” Ryan told MCV. “You’re not alone in making that comment—and I think it is a legitimate comment—about only just getting going on the games side of things on PS4.”
Sony wants to be “ready and able to demonstrate [the PlayStation Neo] properly,” he added. “So we will do that when we are ready, when we can show it properly.”
Ryan didn’t mention a timeline for the PlayStation Neo reveal.
Sony had a strong focus on PlayStation VR at this year’s E3 press conference; the company announced the VR headset will be released on October 13. Due to its popularity, Sony is expecting shortages.
Sony revealed several new VR games for PlayStation VR—including Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission and Batman: Arkham VR. Square Enix has also added PlayStation VR capabilities to Final Fantasy XV.
Additionally, Sony is releasing the PlayStation VR Aim Controller to serve as a 1:1 weapon for in-game use. Developer Impulse Gear is among the first to utilize the controller with space adventure VR game Farpoint.
