The Battlefield 3 blackout was odd but understandable when you read through their reasoning. It was less entitled and more an attempt to get conversation between the developers and the fans going, so that they knew their complaints about the game were being addressed and that they weren't hoping for fixes that would never come. They saw it as a two-way street, "tell us what you're fixing and we'll keep telling you what's going wrong."
Then Mass Effect 3 happened and, no matter who you are or what you thought of that game, you have to agree that things got a little out of hand. It got to the point where people actually believed that they were paying to make a new ending and they were doing so willingly. While bits of this will continue despite Bioware working on "clarification," it's as good as over.
Now Modern Warfare 3 is getting it's very own controversy (as if it hadn't been surrounded by it since day one). On April 20th, PC and console players will be holding a "global blackout" to punish Infinity Ward and Activision for a lack of support. With only 130 followers on their Twitter account, it's not looking like it's quite managed to scrape up the followers needed to hit that global status, but they're still hoping to make a difference. They're currently demanding everything from fixing the spawn system to getting rid of death streaks, the latter something that Bowling made clear would never be removed.
While we're not expecting anything to come of it, we'll keep you updated if the movement ever actually manages to move.
