Sony Confirms ‘High-End’ PlayStation 4

June 10, 2016 by Nicole Carpenter

The upgraded console won’t be unveiled at E3.

Sony is working on an upgraded PlayStation 4, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House has confirmed. However, it won’t be revealed at next week’s E3 conference in Los Angeles.

The new console—which has been code-named Neo—will offer improved performance and 4K resolution. The “high-end” PlayStation 4 is expected to cost more than the current $350 console.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” House told Financial Times. “We will be selling both [consoles] through the life cycle.”

House did not mention a timeline for the PlayStation 4K’s debut, nor did he comment on the console’s price. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” House said.

Players can expect “all or a very large majority” of games to be supported on the high-end PlayStation 4, as developers will see a “seamless” process used in creating games for both consoles. Games for the PlayStation 4K will only require a “small but manageable” amount of extra work.

Both consoles will support Sony’s PlayStation VR headset, which will be available later this year.

Sony competitor Microsoft is rumored to be releasing its new Xbox One console at E3 next week.
