The ever-pervasive Notch, creator of Minecraft and much of its post-release content, has come forth in saying that he’d like to – in essence – recreate classic space trading game Elite. While many would say the game was a landmark in video game history, Notch disagrees. He says that in creating this game, he would want to bring back the genre, “except done right.”
“I want the space game that’s more like Firefly,” said Notch, “I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.” It looks like he’ll be delving into a more task-oriented experience, should he decide to undergo said project. Much of Minecraft’s success came from user-generated adventure maps, which gave players a clear goal: something Minecraft lacked in its early days.
“The goal is to do it the same way I did Minecraft,” he continued. “Just basically have me work on it for a while, and then we’ll add people as needed, and try to charge as soon as possible, because it’s probably going to be open ended sandbox game as well, so it doesn’t need to be completed before people can play it.”
He hasn’t fully committed to making the game yet, and has made it known he holds no hard feelings towards anyone who might steal the idea.
