On the Darksiders community website earlier today, a member of the THQ staff going by the username THQSledgehammer posted his first entry into a “Meet the Team” series set to be released intermittently until the game goes gold in June later this year.
In this entry, THQSledgehammer interviews Marvin Alexander Donald, Game Director at Vigil Games. We’ve provided the text from the forum post in question, but if you want to read it from the source, head over to the community forums here. We urge you to watch the forums there for future iterations of the series, as well as take part in both discussion here on Gameranx and the Darksiders forums.
THQSledgehammer: Where did you start your game industry career and what was your first title?
Marvin: I started at a small studio, in Mesa Arizona, called Cinematix. I worked on Revenant (PC) as an Animator.
THQSledgehammer: How does an average day at Vigil Games look as the Director of Darksiders II?
Marvin: Most of my focus is on story. Watching over the process from writing to its many end results including cut-scenes, quests, and all of the key in-game moments.
THQSledgehammer: What would you say is the hardest thing about your job?
Marvin: Keeping track of the little details. We have a lot more content this time around. That means lots more writing, characters, voice acting, everything! When we iterate on the design of the game, we have to make sure that new changes don’t break the story’s continuity.
THQSledgehammer: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to work to become a Game Director?
Marvin: Hmmmm, I’d say “Connect with your audience” and “Develop your attention to detail”. The two go hand in hand. You need the wisdom to know where to focus your energy. Otherwise, you may spend too much time on the things that don’t matter the most.
THQSledgehammer: What has been the most exciting experience you have had while working on Darksiders II?
Marvin: Traveling around the world and meeting people that can’t wait to play DS2.
THQSledgehammer: Who is your favorite horseman of the Apocalypse?
Marvin: Death, easily…
