Borderlands 4 Players Lament Lack Of Enemy Variety

December 4, 2025 by Todd Black

People want to kill a lot more wicked things!

There are certain “standards” that one would expect from a video game, depending on its genre. For example, you’d expect puzzle games to have some hard mental problems to figure out. You’d expect an RPG to have a deep story and gameplay with key choices within, and you’d expect an FPS to have plenty of shooting action for you to have fun with. However, there are also some “obvious things” that you’d expect developers and publishers to have in their titles, but it doesn’t always turn out that way. Borderlands 4 has once again been brought up in that regard, but this time, it has to do with enemy variety.

Over on Reddit, one fan laid it all out that even with the main game and some of the post-campaign content, enemy variety is hardly peak:

“Yeah, I know. Borderlands has never really been known for it’s massive enemy variety but I never really felt it until now. At least in former games, you’d come near vaults and you’d see guardians there. Here, you enter a vault and you see a anorexic maliwan troopers.

I just finished Bounty Pack 1 now, and there was… basically nothing here? Same enemies, a bad guy that gets built up. He actually gets a splash introduction, which is rare. And he turns out to be… A reskinned and somehow less interesting Spymaster Horace. With a Bulkhead as a minion… This is our third boss which is the same basic enemy but with a larger healthpool.

I am growing rather tired of everything being either bandits, order troops or one note creatures with a single gimmick. Then reskin these for DLC, for vaults, for everything else. Anyone else feel like this?”

That does indeed “lay it all out,” and sure enough, a lot of other Borderlands 4 players felt the same way:

“Im 100% with this. It feels like the same handful of enemies and nothing else.”

Some noted that they hope the upcoming DLC content will help fix this, but that’s not a guarantee. In fact, not only did some people say that the game had the WORST enemy variety in the series, some called out Gearbox Software for making this title have the WORST variety of ANY category in the game! That’s pretty harsh, but when you think about how polarizing the game has been, you can understand where they might be coming from here.

Hopefully, things change. If not…? Expect more backlash.
