With every new entry that a video game series has, there are certain “natural upgrades” that one should and will expect to ensure that the developer doesn’t “take a step backward” or “play it safe” now that they have a successful entry. There are exceptions to this rule, of course, and we’ve seen many of them play out over the last few years. However, in the case of GTA 6, especially with how long the game has been taking to come out, many expect things to be “bigger and better in every way,” and that includes the size of the map that they’ll be on when the time comes.
We know that the game will be set in the state of Leonida, and that, based on the game’s official description, we’ll be going in and out of Vice City during the game’s events. That alone paints a nice picture of how big the game’s map might be. Vice City alone will be huge, as it’s based on Miami, and Rockstar Games will want to make it as robust as possible. But adding in areas outside of it could make things even grander.
On Reddit, there’s a picture circulating that highlights how big the GTA 6 map may be compared to the last entry in Rockstar’s crime series. If it is to be believed, that would mean the game will have a map twice the size of Los Santos.
So, what were the reactions to the potential size of the map? Many just want to get in a virtual car and drive around the place:
“Just cruising around Leonida will be such a joy, taking in everything there is to see. A blast, especially with knowing R* striving to achieve something even greater in this world than what they did with the masterclass they crafted in RDR2.”
Many want the “random encounters” mechanic to be included in this new game, and we can see why they’d want that, as it would keep players on their toes as they drive around. Others looked at the map and wanted to be guaranteed they wouldn’t have a long driving mission just to get to a certain location, which is a fair fear to have.
And some think that the map size could lead to a lot of fun for a lot of years:
“To be honest, I don’t have a problem with a huge map, considering I’ll be using it for the next 15 years. Quite the contrary, I actually prefer it…”
So, in this case, gamers like it big! We’ll see how big the map actually is when the game releases next year.
