Borderlands 4 was Gearbox Software’s latest big release. We saw the game hit the market back in September, and it achieved some impressive numbers for the franchise. It was a brand-new looter shooter experience, and one that was incredibly hyped. The development team even boasted that they were ahead of schedule and had managed to release the game earlier than previously stated.
When Borderlands 4 launched, it achieved some significant numbers. The Steam platform can allow us a view into how well the game is doing. For instance, we know that there was an all-time peak of over 300,000 for Borderlands 4, which surpasses the previous installments. However, things are now taking a turn for the worse.
Borderlands 4 Player Count Is Down Big Time

Borderlands 4 is hitting some new lows for the franchise on Steam. Thanks to the folks over at Gamerant, we’re getting some insight into the player count. In particular, we’re finding that during the two months of the game, we’re seeing just under 20,000 players actively enjoying the game. That’s still a sizable number, but as Gamerant pointed out, this installment is seeing the most significant player drop in just two months compared to the other installments.
With Borderlands 4, there was a 93% player drop. While there are more players actively playing than in Borderlands 3, the game has experienced a larger percentage loss. That’s because Borderlands 4 hit a far larger all-time peak of players than its predecessor. Meanwhile, Borderlands 2 managed to retain 22,554 players after its two-month anniversary.
It’s not too surprising that we saw some drop in players after launch. As you are likely aware, the latest installment experienced some significant technical issues on the PC platform. Fortunately, Gearbox Software has been working on updates to address these bugs. That said, it might be a bit before we see a new surge of players return. We might see some sizable numbers on Steam for this game after some more content is added into the mix.
Of course, we also have holidays coming up, which could provide players with more time to spend gaming. Additionally, there is the possibility that a large number of new players will join the game after the holidays. However, in other news regarding Borderlands 4, Take-Two’s CEO noted that the sales for the game were softer than anticipated. That said, they are not yet worried about the game.
