Here’s Why Gearbox Has Become Mum On What’s Next For Borderlands 4

November 10, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

It’s easy to forget but devs are people too.

As you may have noticed, Gearbox has started slowing down on talking in public and even making updates for Borderlands 4. Now we have gotten a small update on why that is.

EpicNNG had a question that he shared out in the open, but was meant for Gearbox. He said this:

Would love some comment from the developers on the state of the game currently. We have tons of valuable feedback coming in from numerous avenues right now.

While I know the devs are listening, I’d love to know how they feel about the feedback, and where we go in the future.

What The Community Has Been Telling Gearbox

EpicNNG shared a lot of that feedback himself, as a particularly high-profile member of the Borderlands community. But whether you’re a big YouTuber or just a random fan, there’s widespread consensus on what has been ailing the game.

In fact, the main campaign and its story has been very well received. Many of the things that fans disliked in Borderlands 3 were addressed and fixed in Borderlands 4.

The real problem is the endgame. There isn’t enough to go around and the very recent Horrors of Kairos got botched in its execution.

There were also issues with the game’s performance and optimization at launch. While Gearbox has not addressed every bug and issue from this, they have mostly addressed them.

Gearbox’s Very Meaningful, Short Statement.

Gearbox creative director Graeme Timmins responded to EpicNNG with a short but meaningful response. He said this:

We’re working on some stuff and hope to layout some more info in a roadmap blurb. Lots keeping us busy at the moment.

Now that statement may not seem like it means a lot on the surface. But you have to understand where Gearbox and Borderlands 4 has been since launch.

Because Gearbox had to address a host of technical issues for the first month, they are only now starting to address game balance.

But even then, they’re still running into problems. For example, they just reversed a nerf on the infamous Crit Knife, because the nerf created new  and unintended discrepancies.

The pressure is also on for them to deliver on a meaningful endgame. But because Gearbox already had a roadmap in mind, they have money invested in those plans as well.

And then of course, there are the outstanding promises of a Switch 2 port and cross-save/cross progression. We’re sure Gearbox is capable of meeting all these challenges.

But the pressures to deliver now is sure to be stressful. It may feel like the studio is back to the last few months before launch.

So, we will all be waiting for Gearbox’s next update. We can’t know what technical challenges they are dealing with behind the scenes, but we’re sure they know what the fans want and they’re working to deliver on it as best as they can.
