It looks like Borderlands 4 has something hiding in there for Borderlands 2 fans to find.

Gearbox senior level designer Vanessa Little dropped this tantalizing tidbit on Twitter:
I wonder if anyone found my BL2 DLC Easter egg yet…
When asked for a hint, she said this:
She captains her own ship
Who Is Captain Scarlett And What’s Her Ship?
While Borderlands 2 is recognized as one of the most influential video games of all time, we can understand if some of you are not familiar. There is definitely a newer generation of gamers coming into Borderlands 4, and some of you may have gotten your start on Destiny 2.
Captain Scarlett was the central figure of Borderlands 2 DLC Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty. The famous Vault Hunters travel to Oasis, following a lead from Marcus about a secret treasure.
You eventually run into Scarlett, who’s a real pirate. Scarlett gives you the DLC quests to get to the treasure. It all culminates in one final battle against the treacherous but oddly honest scalawag, kinda.
The Strange Story of Scarlett
Gearbox loves to bring back their older Borderlands characters to newer games. But oddly enough, they somehow haven’t found a way to bring Scarlett back herself.
It may simply be the case that they couldn’t come up with a scenario that makes sense for her return. It’s also possible that she doesn’t have that many fans within Gearbox itself.
At least we know of one level designer who likes Scarlett enough to give her some tribute in the new game. Apparently, there’s a fan who already found this tribute already.
But for the sake of fans who really want to do this on their own, we aren’t spoiling that here.
Gearbox Could Just Bring Scarlett Back For Real Though
It really should not be that hard to bring back Scarlett in some capacity. Like Wario’s unexpected antagonist Captain Syrup, Scarlett could simply return as a new merchant with some new dialogue to share.
Of course, it would also be interesting if Borderlands came up with some new pirate themed adventure to involve her in. And given Gearbox’s proclivities, we think fans would welcome some revisions to her story.
If they do it right, they could connect her to one of the other legacy characters. They could even make her a series regular. Just don’t make her a Siren, too.
