Borderlands 4 Performance Drops The Longer You Play On Console

September 17, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

The current fix is just restarting the game.

Borderlands 4 was just released into the marketplace last week. It was a game that many fans had been eagerly waiting for. With Borderlands 3 not quite hitting for all players, there was a hope that Gearbox Software would be able to turn things around for this installment. While this might be an overall better game in some players’ eyes, it looks like there are more than a few performance issues affecting the gameplay experience.

If you’re playing Borderlands 4 on PC, you might be aware of the performance issues. We’ve seen numerous comments online about the technical issues some PC players are experiencing. However, it looks like console players are also getting hit with some performance woes. It turns out the longer you play Borderlands 4, the worse the performance can get.

Borderlands 4 Console Players Are Noticing A Drop In Performance

Borderlands 4 developers are likely extremely busy as they work to optimize the game for all platforms. Likewise, they are still gearing up to launch the game on the Nintendo Switch 2. While PC players have been vocal and messaging Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford, it looks like console players are joining in.

Borderlands 4 on the console platform might be dealing with some issues, the longer they play the game. As noted by IGN, this seems to be more of an issue on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Right now, it appears that Gearbox Software is aware of this issue. However, there is no fix available to sort this mess out permanently.

Instead, Randy Pitchford went online to say that the current workaround to get the game’s performance back to normal is restarting the game. To clarify, it’s not restarting your entire campaign. Instead, simply save the game, exit, and then relaunch it.

In other news regarding the console version of the game, Gearbox Software is aware that players want a FOV slider. It’s already been confirmed that the developers are looking at a way to implement this feature into the game. Likewise, for those of you who have yet to pick up a copy of Borderlands 4, despite some of the performance issues, you can check out our Before You Buy coverage of the game below. That should hopefully help you decide whether to pick up a copy of the game.
